Why Do Dartboards Bulge?*

Posted in: Interesting stuff , Maintenance , Tips&Tricks

Buying a new dartboard is an important investment. You want to make sure you get the best
product you can afford and that it stays in great condition. However, some dartboards can
deteriorate quickly
and one of the common ways they do this is by bulging.

You will be able to tell when your dartboard begins to bulge because you will see it with
the naked eye. Once a section or a larger area of the dartboard begins to bulge out, this becomes very obvious.

Why do dartboards bulge? Is there anything you can do to prevent it from happening?

Dartboards can bulge for a number of reasons and perhaps the most common is due to wear and
tear
. Even the best dartboard will start to bulge after excessive use. Nothing lasts forever and
just like a car or computer, dartboards are also prone to deterioration.

However, the first thing you should do is buy a quality dartboard. A good example is the Assassin
Blade Pro dartboard from IgnatGames
. This is made of super dense premium-grade Kenyan sisal
and should last for a long time. To help prevent the dartboard from bulging, you should rotate the
board regularly.

This means moving the scoring ring around the dartboard so you are not constantly hitting the same segment of the board. The more you hit the same segment, the more likely it is to bulge.

There are two other main reasons why dartboards bulge and the first is moisture. If the sisal fibers are exposed to moisture, they will swell and begin to pull away from the back of
the dartboard. If you leave your dartboard in an area that is subject to moisture, for example, outdoors, this is only going to lead to damage in the long term.

If you like playing darts outside, always bring the dartboard in with you when you have finished as
this will prevent bulging.

Humidity is another reason why dartboards bulge. Even indoor environments can have high
humidity and the warmer the air, the more water it contains. Much like moisture, water that
gets into the dartboard's fibers will make them swell and push away from the
back of the board.

Needless to say, you should not put water on your dartboard for any reason. You may be tempted
to wash your dartboard if it looks a little grubby but this is a bad idea as it will enhance bulging.
