Removable or Non-Removable Steel Tips?*

Posted in: Interesting stuff

When playing the most popular form of darts, which includes the use of a bristle dartboard, you will need a set of steel tip darts.

There are 1,000’s of different designs of steel tip darts from which to choose and it can be easy to become overwhelmed. Steel tip darts can be made from different materials, come in varying lengths and with a choice of colors.

You must also consider the weight of the steel tip darts you want to use and the vital accessories, such as stems and flights.

However, one option when buying darts which is often overlooked in favor of those mentioned above is whether to have removable or non-removable steel tips. The set you decide to purchase may be influenced by the appeal of playing with soft tip darts.

If you ever want to try and play darts using a soft tip board or you go into a bar to find all they have are soft tip boards, buying a set of darts with removable steel tips may be a good option. You could invest in a set of soft tips and always keep them in your case. That way if you find yourself tempted by a game of darts on a soft tip board as opposed to a bristle dartboard, you can remove the steel tips from your darts and replace them with soft tips.

The real benefit of removable steel tip darts in this instance, is that they allow you to play on soft tip boards with your own darts. This means you know you will play well using them and will not need to adjust to a different set of darts every time.

The second benefit of buying a set of darts with removable steel tips is you can replace them easily. With many sets of darts, if the steel tip becomes damaged, it can be difficult to remove it and replace it with a new one. This means you may have to buy a new barrel, which can be expensive and depending on which set of darts you own, may lead you into having to buy a set of three.

If the tip of your dart breaks and you are using a set with removable steel tips, you will not only be able to replace them easily, you should be able to do it immediately. It is a good idea to keep a couple of spare points in your darts case for when this situation arises. You can quickly remove the damaged steel tip and replace it with a new one before continuing with your game.

In many cases, if you damage a non-removable steel darts tip, you will not be able to use that dart again immediately but by investing in a dart repointing tool, you can replace it. The tool will remove the old point from the dart and you can use the same tool add a new steel point to the dart.

In many respects, there is no right or wrong when it comes to using removable or non-removable steel tip darts. If you plan to only ever play on a bristle dartboard, then non-removable tips are probably not required, as you can use the dart repointing tool to replace them when damaged. If you would like to play soft-tip darts occasionally, then a set of removable steel tip darts are a good option.
